Solar 2 Wave - Floating PV
Innovate UK
Overview
Solar2Wave is Indonesia’s first floating offshore solar PV prototype, designed to withstand open sea conditions and generate renewable electricity in coastal environments.
The project is a collaborative initiative involving:
Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS)
Cranfield University (UK)
Universitas Pattimura
Orela Shipyard
HelioRec & Achelous Energy Ltd (UK)
Funded by Innovate UK With engineering & installation support from GMN Energy
Location:
Gili Ketapang, East Java, Indonesia
Prototype launched in March 2024
Project Scope & Role of GMN:
GMN contributed as the engineering and installation partner, delivering expertise in offshore solar deployment, structural mounting, and electrical integration under challenging marine conditions.
This floating PV system is designed for:
Surviving high wave exposure
Coastal energy generation
Sustainable electrification in archipelagic areas
Key Features:
Floating structure with wave-resilient design
Grid-independent solar electricity generation
Expandable for small islands, ports, & fisheries
Impact:
Solar2Wave opens a new frontier for renewable energy in Indonesia — enabling solar access in locations where land-based installations are limited or impossible.
